The first line of defense in fighting acne is plain soap and water, or another cleanser if soap is not right for your skin type. Depending on what your skin type is, how sensitive it is, and what allergies you might have, you should choose your soap or cleanser carefully so that it does not cause irritation.
Use the right products for your skin. Do not use oil-based products if you have oily skin or powder-based ones if you have dry skin. Using oil-based products for oily skin just add up to the oil production thus causing pores to clog. Using powder-based ones for dry skin just absorb the already little production of oil. Determine your skin type so you could choose the correct products.
Benzoyl peroxide primarily works as an oxidizing agent, which allows oxygen to penetrate through the pores and into the skin, creating an oxygen-rich (aerobic) environment. Hence, Benzoyl peroxide is an antiseptic as it indirectly kills Propionibacterium acnes - the culprit for acne outbreaks. As this medication reduces the quantity of bacteria on the surface of skin, it does not however trigger bacterial resistance or adverse reaction to antibiotics. Moreover, Benzoyl peroxide also deters the multiplication of yeasts on the skin.
